Typically, when one thinks “Dog Show” one is thinking of the conformation aspect of dog shows. Sometimes described as the “Beauty show” with respect to dog shows, conformation involves a judge examining a dog and comparing it to its breed standard. All dogs are compared to their standard, and the judge declares that the dog that closest to meeting the standard is the winner.
The show itself is easiest if thought of as a pyramid, and the dog is to climb the pyramid as it wins. Each show sees each dog entering the ring for the right to compete for Best of Breed. Dogs that have not received 10 points in shows compete in the classes. The best “class” male and female will compete against “Specials” (dogs that have achieved Champion status”) for Best of Breed. The best of each breed will return to compete in group judging – against the other dogs within its group (for the IG that would include the toy Poodle, Chihuahua, Pug, Pomeranian, Yorkie, etc). The winner of each group will then compete against each other to see who will emerge with the Best in Show. |
